Rangpur civic polls outcome won't affect national elections: Muhith

Abul Maal Abdul Muhith

Ruling Awami League leader and finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Friday appreciated the electoral process in Rangpur City Corporation polls where AL ally Jatiya Party candidate defeated AL mayoral candidate with a huge margin.

The senior member of the premier Sheikh Hasina-led cabinet, however, believes, this result will not affect the coming general elections scheduled to be held in late 2018.

"The impact of Rangour City Corporation elections will be minimal. It's a local affair," he said while talking to newsmen after inaugurating insurance fair in Sylhet.

Muhith, who once served Jatiya Party (JaPa) chief HM Ershad's military regime as finance minister in the 1980s, pointed out that JaPa is quite popular in Rangpur region.

JaPa is currently an ally of the ruling Awami League and partner in the cabinet although it is also the official opposition in parliament. Ershad is the emissary of the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.

Dwelling on the general elections, he expressed his opinion that there are many political parties in the country and each of them will perform better in different parts.

Congratulating the newly elected Rangur mayor Mostafizar Rahman, the minister said, "This election has established the neutrality of the process."

Immediately after conclusion of the voting on Thursday and much before announcement of the election results, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader conceded defeat of his party candidate to the alliance partner JaPa's.
